Where I COULD have been earlier tonight.....

, but lady luck did not whisper in my ear...

As some of you may know, the World Series began earlier tonight. I have a friend who knows somebody who knows somebody who has their hands into many prominent events in the city. Well, my friend calls me this morning to let me know that we could possibly be on the field tonight for the opening act (Bob Seger) since several dozen extras were needed to hold a giant American flag for the aerial shots and related situations during the singing of America the Beautiful. So, at first this situation is sounding like it's a sure thing and I was hyped about the prospect of being out there in front of 50K people in the stadium and millions of TV and Internet users, but then my friend gets a callback that makes it sound as though it's now more of a 50/50 shot because there seemed to be enough people confirmed and we may have not been needed. Anyway, when I heard that it was not a sure thing and I would have rearranged some things I planned to do for today just to go in the first place, I did not want to set myself up for the letdown if the whole thing fell through and we went down there and wasted our time, therefore, I told my friend he should go w/o me if he wanted to test his luck...Well, my friend was on the field and I was watching the game at home....Better luck next time, hopefully.

how many times do I have to tell u to be more spontaneous and grow some balls?

Spontaneous = WASTE of money MOST of the time.

The ROI on being spontaneous is not that great overall...

"waste of money" Dude, you can't take it with you. Live a little, we could all die tomorrow. Hell, I could get hit by a car just crossing the road to get to my house(almost happened today).

Live, man, LIVE!!!!

I hear you and "taking it with me" is not a goal at all. I have just learned that overall in my life that employing more of a calculated spontaneity has yielded better results rather than just doing whatever with little or no plan...I enjoy my life everyday like its my last, but I am certainly not going to "be spontaneous" at the point in which it drains the cash flow (or time because time is money...) as if I can just snap my fingers and recoup it....

You do realize that "Calculated Spontaneity" is an oxymoron, Right?

Josue' said...

Not really, because "Spontaneity" is the real oxymoron. Ultimately we all have control over what we do unless there is a gun to our heads and even then we can chose to comply or die...pretty simple. As far being spontaneous in one's life goes, it still is a choice, therefore not even really a spontaneous event...we are not chemisty experiments. :p

But we are chemistry experiments, and we do act spontaniously. You ever have a thought just pop into your head and simply act on it? We are animals, never forget that. Spontaneous is not an oxymoron. Sure, the only thing we can truely control in this world is our reactions to things, but that does not mean that we always act with logic in mind.

May I have a fresh helping of resolutionless banter please?

Look the only thing that matters here is that Josue had an opportunity for a once-in-a-lifetime type of moment and instead of taking the risk he decided to back out. So what if it didn't happen and you would've been dissapointed? So what if you had wasted a little time? If something like that comes along you have go for it. If it happens, great. If it doesn't, so what? Josue is obviously not a risk taker.

I, on the other hand, would've been down at the stadium the second I heard that the possibility existed. Hell if my Bears make the Super Bowl, you better believe I'll be in Miami, trying to beg, borrow, and steal my way into the stadium. A moment like that may not come again.

Dan,
Having a thought and acting still requires that whole HUMAN connection of deciding WHAT to do....hence, STILL a choice...

Dub,
Ding, ding, ding......Resolutionless banter is the winner!!

Dave,
I have no problem with risk and last time I checked, my Lions, Tigers and Pistons don't help me sleep better at night regardless of winning or losing or put food on my table as much as I love being a fan...We're not talking stock options and real estate investments here...Sheesh.

Unlike some of my fellow brethren in the blogosphere, the idea of "backing out" of a risk with an uncertain payoff in which I had to rearrange my life/schedule for the day is not really that significant of a payoff....Next week, holding a gigantic US flag on a baseball diamond for the World Series would really not have meant that much in the grand scheme of my life...

Dave said...

Is your life so structured that rearranging one day would've thrown you off? C'mon now.
Going to game one of the World Series and getting to stand on the field of your hometown team in front of thousands of people with all this energy and electricity in the air would not have meant much? You must lead a pretty exciting life then, huh?

Josue' said...

I would say, Yes, my life is that structured...I like to have a rudder in the water of life....not just an aimless drift into oblivion....my notice for this whole event? TWO HRS. NOT enough time if the risk did not pay off...Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but either way, my life is not better or worse for deciding to not take that particular risk..

I may not have mentioned this, but the whole flag-holding thing was JUST for the start of the game and then they booted you out of the stadium...It was not as if I had a fully catered suite and would have been walked down to the field by security or anything like that. It would have been as long as Seger sang....

It still would've been cool. Carpe Diem.

I agree...I know, I know...Seize the day, I should have.......
